Tonya Benedict Education Room​

Named in honor of a former Saunders School student, Tonya Benedict (a plaque is located outside the classroom in her memory).

This room is located on the main floor of the original 1916 building, East classroom.

​

Mount Pleasant was known as the "Athens of Iowa" for the educational opportunities that were offered here. For example: Iowa Wesleyan University and Howe's Academy - both founded in 1842.

​

Displays highlighting Howe's Academy, Mt. Pleasant Academy and the local schools. Teacher's desk and round oak tables came from Carnegie Public Library on North Main.
